THE STORY OF 1984

Welcome to 1984

WELCOME TO 1984.

The year started with Top Of The Pops celebrating it's 20th Anniversary while at the same time banning a chart song from BBC airplay.

Originally believed to be a song about stress and not calling a friend when in need 'Don't Do It, When You Wanna Call' it was realised by Top Of The Pops presenter and Radio D.J. 'Mike Read' that the song was all about masturbation and actually said 'Don't Do It, When You Wanna Come'. Although making no references to sexuality Mike Read got it banned from the BBC

Throughout the year Top Of The Pops was to see changes on set and the charts some new commers that would grace the charts defining the 1980s. But, it was December that changed Everything.

Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas was to set new sales records for the UK business, topping 600,000 in its first week, another 810,000 in its second week and becoming the first single to Top 3 million sales. Another record breaker that week was Wham*s Last Christmas, which scored the biggest one-week sales tally without ever reaching Number 1, selling 500,000 copies* but losing out to Band Aid.

1984 was also they year of the movie and the movie of the year. Nineteen Eighty-Four was a novel published by George Orwell in 1949 about a possible take on what 1984 could really be like if the Nazis had won WW2 and the great Oceanic world where Big Brother was watching every move you make. The soundtrack album was released by Virgin Records the title track being recorded by Eurythmics and released as a single. The single 'Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty-Four) peaked at number 4 in the U.K. and number 2 in the U.S. Although it did not make number 1 it out sold 'Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This' and became established as one of the greatest Euryhmics tracks.
