THE STORY OF 1976

1976 saw 'Disco' at it's peak with over 70% of all chart entries coming under that genre, so if you did not like Disco music? you would not be a 1976 fan. Although Disco was the main genre the year did see a variety of tastes from Easy Listening classics like 'Miss You Nights' by Cliff Richard to Gospel like Ethna Campbells 'Old Rugged Cross', From Rock by The Who to revived 1940s classics in the Swing era.

Yet in all its diversity sales of the 7 inch 45rpm single was at it's all time high and even though the classic hit by Billy Ocean 'Love Really Hurts Without You' being in the top 5 best selling singles of the year it didn't reach number one. The Biggest number one and biggest selling single of the year being the U.K. winning the 'Eurovision Song Contest' 'Kisses For Me' by Brotherhood Of Man. Followed closely behind by ABBAs 'Dancing Queen at No.2 and 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' by Elton John and Kiki Dee a close third.
