Welcome To Every Chart Entry Of 1959
As the decade entered it's final year 1959 saw a tragedy that shook the music world to it's very foundations.
In the early hours of February 3rd a plane crash claimed the lives of three great Rock 'n' Roll singers together with the pilot of the plane. It was 'The Winter Dance Party Tour' starring 'Buddy Holly & The Crickets' 'The Big Bopper' 'Dion & The Belmonts' and 'Ritchie Valens'. They had finished performing at Clear Lake in Iowa after performing in Wisconsin and Minnesota. After Clear Lake they were due to perform in Fargo in North Dakota.
The tour bus the musicians were using was lacking service and had issues in the severe cold weather that year. By the time they arrived at Clear Lake the whole heating system of the tour bus had broken, leaving the artists to travel in temperatures of -10C (14F).
'Buddy Holly' charted the three passenger flight and it's pilot and it was decided the three that would fly would be 'Buddy Holly' himself with 'J. P. Richardson' (The Big Bopper). Then at the toss of a coin between 'Tommy Allsup' (Crickets guitarist) or 17 year old 'Ritchie Valens'. 'Ritchie Valens' won the toss but lost his life as moments after take off the plane crshed in a nearby field to Lake Iowa, killing all four on impact.
'The Winter Dance Party Tour' continued throughout the planned States until it's completed on February 15. The late artists were replaced by 'Frankie Avalon' 'Fabian' and 'Jimmy Clinton' and 'Bobby Vee' Performed on the night of 3rd February in Fargo.
What happened that night shook the music industry and 'Rock 'n' Roll' music lovers in disbelief. Thirteen years later Don McLeans hit 'American Pie' would immortalize that day as 'THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED' which went to number 1 in the 'Billboard' Charts in the U.S. and number 2 in the U.K.
